{"id":874332,"date":"2020-10-02T10:21:32","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smashballoon.com\/?post_type=doc&#038;p=874332"},"modified":"2025-01-24T10:12:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-24T16:12:38","slug":"instagram-api-error-message-reference","status":"publish","type":"doc","link":"https:\/\/smashballoon.com\/doc\/instagram-api-error-message-reference\/","title":{"rendered":"Instagram API Error Message Reference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you receive an error message when trying to display your posts then you can use the table below to diagnose the issue and find the relevant solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are API requests being delayed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your website attempts to make several bad API requests in a short period of time, Instagram will temporarily block all requests from your website. To prevent this, the plugin will set a delay of 5 minutes until another API request is made. You can save your settings at <em>Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; Feeds<\/em>&nbsp;to immediately try another API request.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m seeing error messages that no longer apply. Why is this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The plugin will log API errors to help troubleshoot connection issues. Only some of these errors will clear on their own when the issue is resolved. If you&#8217;d like to reset these error messages, go to <em>Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; Advanced<\/em> and click the <strong>Reset<\/strong> button next to <em>Reset Error Log<\/em>. You can also save your settings at <em>Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; Feeds<\/em> to clear hashtag related errors.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"sb-error-message-block_c41e4becbb1e5992e9c941337ff65c45\" class=\"sb-error-message-wrapper\">\n    <div class=\"sb-error-message-inner\">\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"alter\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Database Error: <\/strong>Insufficient ALTER permissions for your database user.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>Please ensure your database user has ALTER permissions. Contact your hosting provider if needed. Once resolved, deactivate and reactivate the plugin to complete the update.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>API Error 400: <\/strong>Your account is connected to Facebook account, and your Facebook account\u2019s future off-Facebook activity is currently turned off.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>Due to how the Instagram\/Facebook API works, if the future off-Facebook activity setting is disabled, you can not use our Instagram or Facebook apps to display the feed. In order to connect the source and display the feed, you will have to connect using a Facebook account or Instagram account with its connected Facebook account that does have this enabled. There is currently no way around this since it is a limitation in the API directly, which we can not affect.You can find detailed information about the off-Facebook activity here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/1224342157705160\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/1224342157705160<\/a><\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Error: No posts found: <\/strong>                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <ul>\n<li>User feed: The account has no posts made on Instagram.com<\/li>\n<li>Recent hashtag feed: No posts have been made to this hashtag in the last 24 hours<\/li>\n<li>You are using a lot of IGTV posts in your feed \u2013 See below<\/li>\n<li>Issue with your Access Token \u2013 See API Error 400: The access_token provided is invalid<\/li>\n<li>Too much filtering with includewords, excludewords, whitelist, or blocking photos \u2013 See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sbv2.test\/post-filtering-not-working\/\">this FAQ<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Your account has a lot of IGTV posts<\/h3>\n<p>Instagram does not yet support IGTV posts in its API. However, these posts are still counted in the API request even if they aren\u2019t returned. This can lead to the plugin thinking there are no posts available if all recent posts are IGTV posts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nTo fix this issue, go to the \u201cCustomize\u201d tab inside the settings page for \u201cInstagram Feed\u201d and find the setting \u201cAPI request size\u201d and raise it to 25 or more depending on how often you use IGTV posts.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Your account is private: <\/strong>Access token will expire.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>This is due to the account being set as \u201cprivate\u201d on Instagram. Object with ID &#8216;xxxxxxxxxxxxx&#8217; does not exist, cannot be loaded due to missing permissions, or does not support this operation.<\/p>\n<p>This can also be due to the Source ID not matching the authenticated source for the Access Token. A potential cause would be settings changes on Instagram\/Facebook. Potential Causes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Changing the admin users of the related Facebook page<\/li>\n<li>Changing the password for the Instagram or Facebook account<\/li>\n<li>Changing your privacy settings for either Instagram or Facebook<\/li>\n<li>Changing settings related to App permissions for either Instagram or Facebook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can reconnect the Source by following <a href=\"https:\/\/smashballoon.com\/doc\/action-required-within-7-days\/?instagram\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\">this FAQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If the error message is still displayed after doing this then try clearing the error log in the following location: <em>Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; Advanced &gt; &#8220;Reset Error Log&#8221; button<\/em>.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"190\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>API error 190: <\/strong>Error validating access token.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <div class=\"expanded\">\n<p>Y<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">ou have an issue with your Access Token. This can be due to changing the password in the connected account or other Security Changes, or due to our app being removed from the account\u2019s Business Integrations. You may also have copied your access token incorrectly when trying to connect an account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Solution:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the source from the plugin navigating to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; remove the connected source(s) by clicking the red trash icon, then click the Save Changes button. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, try getting a new access token and manually connecting. If your site requires more than 30 hashtag feeds, you will need to create a second Facebook\/Instagram business account and connect it by going to <em>Instagram Feed &gt; Settings<\/em> and clicking <strong>Add Source<\/strong> in the <em>Manage Sources<\/em> section.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"1\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>API error 1: <\/strong>An unknown error has occurred.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>Make sure that you are updated to the latest version of the plugin. If this error still appears, there may be a Facebook\/Instagram API issue. Try clearing your cache by going to <em>Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; Feeds<\/em> and clicking <strong>Clear All Caches<\/strong>. If the feed still isn\u2019t updating after a few hours, contact support.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"999\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Error 999: <\/strong>Access token could not be decrypted.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>All Instagram data, including access tokens, are encrypted in your database. If you migrate your database from another site, such as a development or staging site, you may need to reconnect your account or accounts for feeds to update by following these steps:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the source from the plugin navigating to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram Feed &gt; Settings &gt; remove the connected source(s) by clicking the red trash icon, then click the <strong>Save Changes<\/strong> button. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, click <strong>Add Source<\/strong> and recreate the connection. You can also try retrieving an access token and manually creating a connection with our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/smashballoon.com\/doc\/how-to-create-an-access-token-and-user-id-to-manually-connect-an-instagram-account\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you reconnect your account but it continuously gets disconnected again with Error 999 appearing, please follow the steps in <a href=\"https:\/\/smashballoon.com\/doc\/error-999-access-token-could-not-be-decrypted\/?instagram\">this guide<\/a> to correct the issue.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Connection Error: http_request_failed \u2013 cURL error 7: <\/strong>Failed to connect to api.instagram.com port 443: Connection refused                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>Some hosts have restrictions or security settings to prevent remote requests to other websites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nUsually they can fix this or make an exception for your site. Try contacting your host with a message like this:<\/p>\n<p>It looks like our Instagram plugin is encountering an error when trying to connect to the Instagram API. The developers asked us to contact you and mention that we are seeing the error http_request_failed \u2013 cURL error 7: Failed to connect to api.instagram.com port 443: Connection timed out when trying to make remote connections to api.instagram.com\/.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Connection Error: http_request_failed \u2013 cURL error 6: <\/strong>Could not resolve host: graph.facebook.com                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>Your server may not be connected to the internet or your host may be blocking the connection. If you are using a local development environment, make sure you are connected to the internet.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>Connection Error: http_request_failed \u2013 cURL error 28: <\/strong>Resolving timed out after 10000 milliseconds                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>Your server may have restrictions on connecting to the Instagram API.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nIf this occurs when trying to connect a source, try reconnecting after 10 minutes or so. If this doesn&#8217;t resolve the problem or it&#8217;s intermittent, try contacting your host and mention that you are seeing this error when trying to connect to the Instagram API.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative solution is to try connecting as a &#8220;Business&#8221; profile by <a href=\"https:\/\/smashballoon.com\/instagram-business-profiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">following these instructions<\/a>.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                    <div class=\"sb-error-row sb-faq-item\" id=\"200\">\n                <span class=\"sb-fi-arrow\"><svg width=\"13\" height=\"8\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 8\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10.7931 7.77637L6.20312 3.19637L1.61312 7.77637L0.203125 6.36637L6.20312 0.366368L12.2031 6.36637L10.7931 7.77637Z\" fill=\"#141B38\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>\n                <p class=\"sb-fiq\">\n                    <strong>API error 200: <\/strong>Requires instagram_basic permission to manage the object, the app may have the permission but in order to use this API the app needs to be owned by a verified business.                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"sb-faq-answer\">\n                    <p>This happens when the connection between a Facebook page and the Instagram Business Profile connected to the plugin is removed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to connect your source as an Instagram\u00a0Business Profile, there must be a link to a Facebook page.
